Galeotta 2

General Description

Our itinerary begins on a seabed of rock at a depth of 12 m. Skirting along the cliff, you will find yourself admiring an expanse of sea grass on one side, and numerous gorges on the other. At 22 m you will find a landslide of boulders with small holes covered with sciaphilic vegetation. Continuing down to 25 m, you will encounter two grottoes: the first has a wide opening and a sandy bottom, while the second, smaller one features encrusting sponges on the walls. In addition to the grottoes, you will also notice a channel on the right; climbing back towards the surface you will encounter a ridge of rock with crevices to be explored.

Naturalistic Features

The area provides an ideal habitat for several species of starfish and sea urchins. The walls are home to beautiful Mediterranean fanworms, numerous yellow sea fans, not to mention green sea balls, and large specimens of hair mushroom coral. Damselfish and seabream can be found swimming all around. Red mullets, various species of wrasse, chromis chromis, and saddled seabream can all be found in the expanse of sand among the sea grass. The crevices in the walls serve as dens for seabream and moray eels, and red sea fans can be found at a depth of 22 m. The boulders from a landslide are home to sciaphilic vegetation, encrusting sponges, and myriapora truncata (also known as “fake coral”). Sea fans and diadema sea urchins can be found on the walls at the caves’ entrance, with common swallowtail seaperch swimming inside the perimeter. On the way back up you will encounter large groups of salema porgy. The ravines are home to white and gilt-head seabream, while the somewhat irregular bedrock provides shelter for octopi. Here it is not uncommon to find the tropical algae species Asparagopsis taxiformis.
